Hearing Aids
Sound Solutions provides a wide range of hearing solutions. We work closely with several of the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers and are proud to offer hearing solutions from several different companies; unlike some “big box” suppliers and others who only offer one brand. This provides exceptional flexibility for our audiologist to choose the best device for your individual needs rather than “making do” with what is available from a single company.
There are many different types and styles of hearing aids available. The one that is best for you will depend on many factors including the amount of hearing loss you have and the listening situations you are in on a daily basis. The best way to determine the most appropriate hearing aid for you and your unique needs is to have your hearing tested by our licensed audiologist and discuss the options available to you.
Behind the Ear
A behind-the-ear hearing aid rests behind your ear and is either connected via a custom made earmold or by an almost invisible “thin tube” (open fit) that sits in your outer ear and ear canal. This carries the sound from the hearing aid into your ear. Typically these hearing aids have more circuit options and available power than some of the other styles.
Receiver in the Ear
A “receiver in the ear” (RITE or RIC) hearing aid: RIC hearing aids take the receiver (or speaker) out of the behind the ear portion of the aid and place the receiver directly into the ear canal. The two pieces are connected by a very thin wire encased in almost invisible plastic tubing. These types of aids may have a custom or standard ear plug (similar to the open fit aids). These aids also come in a wide variety of colors and shapes and several of the newer ones come with as many circuits and options as the behind-the-ear style.
In the Ear
Custom in-the-ear models are custom made to fit the contours of your ear canal. They do not have the piece behind the ear. All of the mechanical parts are housed inside a plastic shell that is in the ear. They’re easy to insert for most levels of dexterity and avoid conflict when wearing glasses, hats, etc.
There are a variety of sizes, including:
-
Full shell
-
Half shell
-
Canal
-
Mini canal
-
Completely in the canal (CIC)
Depending on the specific type, it may be more or less invisible in your ear. The size and shape of your ear canal along with your specific hearing loss determine which type of custom hearing aid is right for you.
